10 Steps to excel in social media marketing strategy

By Leads Explorer

Every business needs to take part in social media as your customers can or will be using social media to discuss your products and services.
If you start in social media your business needs to excel in social media marketing by: becoming social from the ground up. That is needed for laying the foundations for a long-lasting and committed approach that generates sustainable results and benefits.

Instead of ‘shooting from the hip’ into social media companies need to plan and execute carefully their social media marketing plan. The reason for this is that hardly anything will happen accidentally in favor or positively for your company.
Although social media might seem a pass-time or even a game - it is not – it is serious marketing for your company requiring planning and a goal.

1) Define your aim and objectives
First define what you are trying to accomplish. What do you want to achieve?
These objectives will lead to your strategy and the channels to be used.

2) Define the content
Start writing content with the objectives and the target audience in mind.
It is better to have content at hand then to have to create content on demand.

3) Learn to use social media monitoring services
Many social media monitoring services and tools are available. Search them and experience them using a few examples of your competitors or peers in a different industry.
Free services: www.socialmention.com www.whostalkin.com www.collecta.com Initial free service: www.research.ly

You need to know how to use them and understand the possibilities and the limitations of these services in relation to different social media channels.
Form the analysis of your competitors or peers you will start to learn about social media marketing.

4) Multiple content issuers
It is possible that one person generates, publishes all the content and answers all the questions or remarks on all of the social media websites and channels. However it would be better is several people participate in the publishing as hey will add their own flavor and insights to the content and the discussion making it much more colorful and interesting.
Make sure all involved share the same view and know about the objectives in order to stay cohesive.

5) Communities
As only larger consumer companies will be able to create a community, as a B2B company it will be required to find existing communities that match your market or are related to problems that your solutions solve.
Try to figure out how to interact with these existing communities and engage them. Some subjects or items will generate interest while others will just be overlooked due to no importance for the community or members of the community.

6) Organic process
Instead of hoping for a quick success by using challenging or extreme content - like stunning pictures or a hoax – which will only generate small initial ‘wins’, the goal is to have a natural organic process to build up interest from a community or even build a community within an existing community making your impact more receptive, stronger and long lasting.

7) Integrate and coordinate all of your marketing
Your social media marketing doesn’t exist on it’s own as your other marketing campaigns and efforts like advertising, PR, trade shows and publications can and will reach your target audience too. Both types of marketing need to be cohesive and even to interact.
Hence all your marketing needs to integrate and be coordinated.

8) Commitment to measure
Measure the effects and impacts using social media monitoring tools and web services.
Without measuring there is no existence feasible in your company or business. Every investment in time and effort needs to be measured for knowing the ROI (Return On Investment). You have to know if your investment is worthwhile to continue.

9) Regular report results
Reporting should happen on a regular basis using the same tools or web services to report. New tools can be added but make sure the report stays readable and comprehensive. It is not by compiling tens of reports into one report your report will be better. You need to capture the trends and the results. Not produce thousands of data in tables nobody reads or analysis.

10) Review, cleanse and repeat
As social media marketing is a new discipline not much experience exists and answers are not always available as with other marketing methods.
Moreover the audience, their interest and their attitude changes all of the time.
Hence it is needed to review the results of the actions on a regular basis. Then you need to cleanse where needed in order to be re-used with other communities and to repeat the actions.
